Ashbey's Galleries recent auctions have proved the strengths in a number of areas of collecting with collectors concentrating on a diverse range of items. Silver and Silverplate has been exceeding its estimates time and time again, from Georgian through to modern examples. Not only does date and size of the piece effect the price but more importantly the maker, as can be seen on a relatively small silver dish made by Omar Ramsden which weighed a mere 76g, was sold at a hammer price of R6000.

Auctions are especially useful for the sale of desirable items, with an estimated value. So if a seller is unsure of the price he can get, then auctions are particularly useful. Think of a work of art, which different people would value differently; while a personal collector would value it as another jewel in his collection, the state museum curator would value it in a different manner. An auction often ensures that the object goes to the person who values it the most.
